Poem/Devotional: Alzheimer’s or Dementia
Jan 26, 2012
I have long had a fear about getting old and not remembering who I am or what I am doing. God has given me a lesson or two on this subject. One of these lessons, when my husband and I were in bible school in the early nineties was through a time of outreach ministry.
There was an elderly lady at the senior lodge who always looked forward to our ministry of song and the word through the bible school outreach. She knew her bible and she knew the words to the songs and there was joy in her face when we visited the lodge.
One day she just wasn’t there and we later heard of how she had lost memory and no longer knew what she was doing. I found it distressing…where had she (her mind) gone and her faith with her? It gave me reason to question and wonder how this could be?
God showed me Colossians 3:3 at that time and suddenly I realized where she was….she was in Christ and she was safe!
“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:3 NKJV)
There were other lessons to come, but this one helped to begin to lessen my own fears about that happening to me at some point, knowing that as His child, we have a life that is hidden away safely in Him. Now I am a senior myself and I do not yet know what is to become of me, but I must rest in the wonderful promises of God.
Here is something I wrote at one of these times of panic…..
HIDDEN…
My brain is jumbled
trying to connect the dots
to no avail
blank spots
something missing………..
What was it I wanted?
I long for former clarity
a sharp and quickly focused mind
but it escapes
dead ends
nothing connects
in this kaleidoscope
I call my mind…….
What is happening to me?
This dreaded event called aging
BUT…….
in Him
everything FITS!
PRAISE THE LORD!
HALLELUJAH!!!!
My life is hidden
with God in Christ
and I am on my way…….
HOME 🙂
Amen!

“For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3 AMP)
Thanks for writing this because my aunt has dementia. I’m glad you added a scripture too. I seen you over at Opinionated Man (OM) and saw you like to write about God so I had to come see you.
