An Attitude of Gratitude, Day 15

Day 15, An Attitude of Gratitude

Dec 15, 2012

Today I am thankful the marvel of the brain! It is the most complex organ in the entire body. When I read up on it (see articles from Wikipedia) i am blown away by all the information!

I read this: “the function of the brain is to exert centralized control over the other organs of the body.” That really made me think. We all have this brain, but we know so little about all the work it does and how it does it! We don’t even THINK about it, as a rule! And yet, it controls everything else!

About seeking to understand the mechanisms by which the brain works, the article says this: “The most promising approaches treat the brain as a biological computer, very different in mechanism from electronic computers, but similar in the sense that it acquires information from the surrounding world, stores it, and processes it in a variety of ways.” Interesting, huh?

If the body is not well taken care of, malfunctions can and do occur. I read this: “the human brain is susceptible to many types of damage and disease. The most common forms of physical damage are closed head injuries such as a blow to the head, a stroke, or poisoning by a variety of chemicals that can act as neurotoxins. Infection of the brain, though serious, is rare due to the biological barriers which protect it.

The human brain is also susceptible to degenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. A number of psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia and depression, are thought to be associated with brain dysfunctions, although the nature of such brain anomalies is not well understood.”

Reading this information about the brain just makes me think about God, the creator of this marvelous brain. I hope you will pardon me as I take a “flight of fancy” for a moment or two, with regard to my thoughts about this.

I can picture God as the “brain” of this world. It makes me understand a little better about the sovereignty of God over everything and our apparent “free will” inside of that. Just as in the relationship of the human brain to the body, we all like to walk about thinking we are totally in charge, in control of everything we do……in the same way we forget about our brain, and what it is doing, we forget about God and what He is doing.

We forget that the brain is constantly taking things in, acquiring info and processing it and storing it. We also forget about an all seeing God, who takes note of everything going on, and that we will one day be accountable to Him.

As people on this earth, we don’t always function as well as we could, for many different reasons, just like the human brain. Not the fault of the original designer. Things go wrong, terribly wrong, mostly because of the “disease” of sin. (Yes, I said the “s” word…….sin is alive and well in this world)

Sin can originate from others, the impact of outside influences, like the head injury, or from things we do ourselves, “poisons” we allow into the body, like alcohol and drugs. Sin is also is degenerative and slowly will destroy the brain and even the entire body.

There is hope, however, and that hope comes from God. He made a way for us to be healed, forever! Our healing comes through His provision for us in Christ and in what He did for us. Like corrective medicines to the brain, He repairs all the “degenerative disorders” through the work He did on our behalf on the cross, and we are made whole! Our thinking is healed and all of our processes begin to function properly as they were originally designed to do!

Well my friends, my brain has taken me on this unusual mental journey. If you went with me, congratulations, we have arrived at the end of this “flight of fancy”!

It’s time to sleep…..

Goodnight 😉
