Light into Darkness. Love into Hate. Writing 101, Day 5, Hook ’em with a quote

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches

Thank you, Martin Luther King

I’m ashamed to say that I don’t know much of what Martin Luther King said or wrote, apart from a few quotes here and there! This is something I MUST make every effort to remedy as SOON as possible! However, I found this quote just now, and I like it very much. It is the truth.

It reminds me of God’s word, which says we are to be “salt” and “light” in this world, and tells us not to hide our light under a “bushel”. We have truths to share with the world, truths that will bring light that drive out the darkness, and we have love that was given to us, poured into our hearts by God, love that will drive out hate, the love of God.

I’ve been reminded, as I read this quote from Martin Luther King, of some posts on Facebook recently, which have shown the effects of the depths of darkness and the hate that comes out of a lack of love. I’ve tried to bring some light and love into those situations. I could have quoted some scripture, but I chose to write these two things in response instead.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“………..I have come to understand that hurtful people are really just wounded people who are projecting their own hurts onto others, because they have not yet found love in the deepest of their inner places where it is needed.
That thought changes me and I realize I have the opportunity to be someone who shows love and kindness where there was none.
“People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway……..”
“In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”
(From sayings by Mother Teresa)”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So sorry that there are some………..who cannot appreciate the beauty and strength of your daughter. We all have our faults. It doesn’t do us, or anyone else any good to focus on someone else’s faults or weaknesses. Better for us, and them, to try to be an encouragement, to love and to care. Sad that people hurt so much themselves that they only gain a measure of satisfaction from lashing out at others. I hope and pray that they find the love that they need in their own lives, so they can give that out to others, instead of more pain ❤

Praying hugs and comfort for you from our Father in heaven, sister <3”

Thinking about light and darkness, love and hate , brought something else to mind. These words from the bible speak to us about Jesus:

“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5 NIV

God, the Creator of all things, came to us in the flesh, in the form of Jesus, out of love for His creation. He came to bring us out of the darkness and back into the light. In Christ, He made the way of salvation, a free gift offered to all. Wonderful love. Powerful light.

Jesus said this of Himself: ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life.’” John 8:12.

He also said this:

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34,35

I was reminded also of the sermon I heard in church this morning, about how God’s love for us causes us to act in love towards others. Until we know God, and what He did for us, and is doing for us, we don’t truly know the full extent of love. God IS love. In knowing Him, and being empowered by His indwelling Spirit, we are able to love others with His kind of love, the only kind of love that can truly dispel darkness and hate. It’s a sacrificial love.

Perhaps your Spirit guided words or actions today may be the very thing that brings light into a dark place, the thing that points someone to the light, love, and truth of God that they have needed all along without even knowing it. You may be the only “bible” they will read.

Something to think about..…….

AJ ❤
