This is the real question that I believe is being asked when believers consider the question of whether or not God is in control.
I know there are people out there, genuine believers, who hold to the idea that God is actually NOT in control of everything. I know why, since a lot is difficult to explain otherwise. However, when I look at life and how things work out, I cannot fail to see God’s plan and design being carried out in every area of our existence.
We all have free will INSIDE the sovereignty of God, which means that bad things happen to good people. Is that God’s FAULT? Some would say yes, because it was “allowed” to happen (people suffer and die) and for that reason, I believe, some explain that that God is NOT actually in control, but I think we humans can allow behaviour and consequences to happen and still be a good parent.
Our Father in heaven is all good and only good. He sees the end from the beginning. He knows EVERYTHING, sees EVERYTHING, and I’m sure is pained and grieved by some of what goes on in His perfectly designed creation. However, His perspective is eternal unlike our limited finite perception of life. He sees how things end.
Scripture says that ALL things work together for GOOD to those who are the called, according to His purpose. I believe that. I think it is definitely difficult to understand if you do not know Him, however. It’s difficult to see the plan, the design, the purpose, even, that exists inside of many horrible events, without the necessary eyes of faith.
If these things pain and distress us in our humanity, imagine the extent and depth of God’s grief over it all, and yet, these sufferings often bring out the most beautiful “pearls” in the longer term outcome which could not have been achieved otherwise. We look BACK and see the purpose that was couched, hidden, inside the distress and confusion of a hurtful situation.
Would this pearl of growth have happened without the depth of experience involved in suffering? Perhaps not. It took going THROUGH that situation to develop the qualities that grew out of it.
So, yes, I believe that God is good and that He is in control and I look for His plan and design in whatever comes my way, even if it is difficult to understand at the time.
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you. Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. [Deut. 4:29-30.] I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will release you from captivity and gather you from all the nations and all the places to which I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I caused you to be carried away captive.”
