Fire alarm is not the best way to wake up! At least we are all OK….
I was still lounging comfortably in bed when the strident sound of the alarm burst into my almost consciousness. What was that? A test? An unannounced fire drill? A real fire?
Got out of bed. Went to the door in PJ’s. Saw a neighbour in the hallway with only her purse heading rapidly for the stairwell. Must be the real thing!
Got dressed, put laptop and iPad in pack sack, grabbed pack sack and purse and headed downstairs to the lobby, where some people were sitting as if nothing was going on and others were gathered outside waiting. I joined the lobby group. It was cold outside and I was barely awake. I don’t like crowds at the best of times and the one inside was smaller.
Firemen arrived and headed up to fourth floor where I reside. Turns out 2 alarms went off because of dust when the manager put the furnace on for the first time in the season.
I guess I fully expected to see the manager with a clipboard list of names of tenants checking it off as he saw us. Shades of teacher training. However, I was disappointed and don’t feel quite as safe. No one seems to know what to do, never having had a proper fire drill.
All we got from the manager was an angry “You can’t stay in the lobby, you have to be outside. If you don’t get outside NOW, you can expect a letter from the board!”. The inside group of old biddies was not the least bit phased by his disgruntled treatise, as they said, “This is where we’ve always been told to gather. In the lobby. I’m not going outside.”
You tell him, ladies! 😉
Another day in our safe and secure senior resident building…….
Yikes!!!! You should organize a safety meeting. Everyone has a role. Every time a person leaves the complex, replace that person’s role with another volunteer. Everyone should know what to do when that happens.

We had the safety meeting and they said there that we needed to work out the details at our building. Never happened!
