Shopping and school days in the 1950’s and 1960’s
I was browsing the internet this morning, after hearing TV news on plastic bags, and thinking about shopping in my early days in Scotland. I was born in 1948, so it was life in the 50’s and 60’s. I found a couple of articles, one on shopping and one on schools, both bringing back many memories of the times.

This article brings back so many memories of growing up in Scotland. It was very much my Mum’s life.
I’m thankful that my Mum emphasized getting an education because she was not given that opportunity, having to stay home to take care of her own Mum instead of going on to High School. She loved learning, however, and attended adult classes whenever she could. I believe this is the true source of my life long love of learning! Thanks, Mum!

Yes, I sat the dreaded 11 plus exam at age 11 in the UK, and passed, despite not starting school until I was 6 years old and spending that 11 plus year getting missing info crammed into me in prep for the mandatory exam which would decide my future! Lots of time at the blackboard with the teacher and many tears of frustration later, I made it!
However, it was not without my Dad helping me at home with my homework, and my Dad’s stern talk with the headmaster of the school (Principal) that I was actually permitted to go to High School rather than the vocational school. He wanted High School for his daughter and nothing less! He had dreams for my education (as did my Mum) and he knew I could handle it.
I was very naughty when I got my results at school. I sadly told my parents at the dinner table that I had failed the exam. Their loving support and encouragement were priceless to have! The fun of telling them I had actually passed was extremely satisfying for us all, and wonderful news for my folks to hear!
Thanks, Mum and Dad, for your push and direction in my life. You both wanted me to have the opportunity neither of you were given! You are both gone from my life, but I am forever grateful for your input!
Thank you, God, for your many blessings on my life!
