The Winter of My Soul
What is this friendless place?
Memories
Speaking to me faintly
Echoes of another time
(Inspired by a long ago reading of Chuck Swindoll’s book, “Come Before Winter”)
by Ann Justin, July 20, 2010
When I wrote this very short poem, I was just stating a fact of my life at the time, 4 years after losing my husband. My soul was in winter and yes, it was a lonely place. Memories of happier times were fading.
It was a sad place. I see it now. Cold. Distant. Quiet.
A year later, I would be having a breakdown and going through cancer. However, incongruous as it might sound, this would be a time of strengthening and recovery, and it would lead to knowing true inner joy.
This is one way God takes our circumstances and “works all things together for good, for those who love Him and are the called, according to His purpose.”
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

Dark night of the soul, hated that period of life. . . told God nothing was worth that kind of suffering. Yes, I retracted that statement later! God’s love is so awesome.

My husband is recovering from cancer and I have a spinal cord injury that led to many related conditions so I understand the dark night. But God is always with us, as you know. All things do work together for good even if we can’t see it sometimes. Thanks for this post. It’s good to be reminded.
